SUBJ: Candidacy of Richard Bohrer

During the 1989-90 academic year, Richard Bohrer taught full time for the Department of Journalism, serving as coordinator of our magazine sequence and teaching magazine and newswriting courses. It was understood from the outset that this would be a one-year contract.

 I was more than pleased with Professor Bohrer's work in this assignment.  Among his many attributes were the following:

            (1.) He did not hesitate to assume command of the magazine sequence.  It was not necessary to outline specific responsibilities and give  individual approval for them to be carried out.  Dick was, in a word, a self-starter.

(2.) He even went beyond his assigned responsibilities.  Dick developed a highly detailed syllabus for his newswriting classes which so captivated some of our other instructors that they integrated it into their own sections of this important course.  He obtained copies of numerous magazines to be studied by his students and made these magazines available for other professors.  He arranged for a large number of outside speakers to be part of his classes.

(3.) He worked hard with students on writing fundamentals.  Students cannot really proceed to hone their writing styles if they do not possess the basic tools.  He worked with students who had language and writing problems to help them get past these first hurdles.  Not everyone has the temperament or ability to accomplish this goal.

(4.) He proved to be patient but at the same time demanding of his pupils.  This, too, is a mix that not every professor can pull off.  But all his students saw him as a caring professor and I'm sure that most of them also saw him as demanding.

 Professor Bohrer certainly has my endorsement as a quality candidate for a teaching position.  I suspect also he would be an excellent editor.

If I thought that telling you that you really don't want to contract Richard Bohrer would enable Liberty University to keep him, I would be tempted to do so.  But the fact is he is a great teacher, a fine person, and an outstanding professional.  We will greatly miss him, but I realize that in his mind that he must move on. 

His talents are numerous.  He served at Liberty University by directing the development of numerous university and ministry publications.  He works with students extremely well.  His wife has also served in a number of part-time teaching assignments in English and Education.  I believe you will be very pleased with his services.

Richard Bohrer has been employed by Liberty  University since August, 1983, and is presently serving in the capacity of Professor of Communication / Journalism.  Mr. Bohrer also is the faculty advisor to the university yearbook staff. As well as these responsibilities, Mr.  Bohrer assists in writing for other campus publications.

Richard's expertise in the field of journalism has been very beneficial to my office as well as to the students in the publication of the campus yearbook.  The students have seen first-hand the work of a professional.

 Dick Bohrer has helped tremendously to make our seven-year-old Liberty University journalism program one of the best for a college our size.  We have already built an excellent reputation in our area.  Our graduates have easily found good jobs in the professional world, and our interns have earned glowing evaluations from their professional supervisors.

 Professor Bohrer is an excellent writing teacher.  He obviously loves his teaching, loves his students, and gives individual assistance especially well.  His students think him to be a hard teacher, but they appreciate and revere him for the quality of the skills he produces in them.  Bohrer has also served as a great example and challenge to our journalism students.  He is the consummate professional, both as a writer and as a teacher.

            During his seven years here at Liberty University, Professor Bohrer has worked tirelessly to serve our students and program in so many ways.  He has served as faculty advisor for both our school newspaper and yearbook, as well as doing considerable outside writing, editing and publishing.  His professional record has also been outstanding.

            Professor Bohrer has always been a most positive asset.  We hated to lose him, and we feel it will be impossible to fully replace him.
